Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

87년 전 우리의 선조들은 이 대륙에 자유로 잉태되고 모든 인간이 평등하게 창조되었다는 전제에 바쳐진 새로운 나라를 탄생시켰습니다. 이제 우리는 그렇게 잉태되고 그렇게 바쳐진 그 나라, 또는 그 어떤 나라가 과연 오래 존속할 수 있을지 시험하는 거대한 내란에 휘말렸습니다. 우리는 그 전쟁의 거대한 전장에 모였습니다. 우리는 그 전장의 일부를 나라를 살리려고 자기 목숨을 던진 이들을 위한 마지막 안식처로서 바치게 되었습니다. 우리가 이렇게 해야만 하는 것은 전적으로 합당한 일입니다.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate— we can not consecrate—we can not hallow— this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

그러나 넓은 의미에서 보면 우리가 이 땅을 바칠 수도 없고, 축성할 수도 없고, 신성하게 할 수도 없습니다. 이 땅을 신성케하는 이들은 여기서 싸운 참전 용사들이기에, 우리의 미약한 힘으로 그것에 뭔가를 더하거나 빼지 못합니다. 세상은 우리가 여기서 말하는 것을 주목하지도 않을 것이며 오래 기억하지도 않을 것입니다. 그러나 용사들이 여기서 했던 일은 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다. 따라서 여기서 싸운 그 용사들이 그토록 고귀하게 진전시킨 미완의 임무에 바쳐져야 하는 것은 살아있는 우리의 몫입니다.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us— that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion— that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

여기 우리 앞에 남아있는 그 위업에 바쳐져야 하는 것은 우리입니다. 이 온힘을 다한 영예로운 전사자들에게서 얻은 헌신을 더욱 키워야 합니다. 우리는 여기에서 이 용사들의 죽음이 헛되지 않았음을 맹세해야 합니다. 신의 가호 아래에 이 나라는 새로운 자유를 낳을 것이며, 인민의, 인민에 의한, 인민을 위한 통치를 이 땅에서 소멸시켜선 안 될 것입니다.
