I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation. Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. ···

우리 나라 역사에서 자유를 향한 가장 위대한 시위로 기록될 이 자리에 오늘 여러분과 함께하게 되어 기쁩니다. 100년 전에 한 위대한 미국인이 노예해방선언에 서명했습니다. 우리는 오늘 그의 그림자가 상징적으로 드리운 곳에 서 있습니다. 이 중대한 선언은 폭압적 불의라는 화염 속에서 사그라들었던 수백 만 흑인 노예들의 희망이라는 거대한 횃불이 되었습니다. 이 선언은 감금 상태라는 기나긴 밤을 끝내는 기쁨에 찬 새벽이 되었습니다. 그러나 백년이 지났는데도 흑인들은 여전히 자유롭지 못합니다. 백년이 지났으나 애석하게도 인종 분리라는 수갑과 차별이라는 사슬에 묶인 흑인의 삶은 여전히 불구 상태입니다. 백년이 지났는데도 흑인들은 물질적 번영이라는 드넓은 바다 중간에 떠있는 고립된 섬처럼 살아갑니다.

Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children. ···

이제 민주주의가 약속한 것들을 실현해야 할 때가 됐습니다. 인종 분리라는 어둡고 황량한 골짜기를 벗어나 인종적 정의라는 양지바른 길로 나와야 할 때가 됐습니다. 인종적 불의라는 모래늪에 빠진 우리 나라를 우애라는 견고한 반석 위로 옮겨야 할 때가 됐습니다. 하느님의 자식인 모든 이들을 위해 정의를 실현할 때가 됐습니다.

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

친구들이여, 오늘 여러분에게 말하고자 합니다. 우리를 절망이라는 골짜기에서 허우적거리게 놔두지 맙시다. 오늘과 내일 여러 난관들에 직면할지라도 내게는 여전히 꿈이 있습니다. 그것은 아메리칸 드림에 깊이 뿌리를 박은 꿈입니다. 언젠가 이 나라가 우뚝 일어서서 “우리는 자명해질 이 진실들을 품고 있으며, 모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었다”라는 그 신조의 참다운 뜻을 실현하리라는 꿈이 내게는 있습니다. 내게는 꿈이 있습니다. 언젠가 조지아의 붉은 언덕 위에서 예전에 노예였던 이들의 자손들과 예전에 노예 소유주였던 이들의 자손들이 우애라는 탁자에 둘러앉는 꿈입니다. 내게는 꿈이 있습니다. 언젠가 미시시피 주마저도, 불의의 열기가 작렬하고, 억압의 열기가 작렬하던 그 주가 자유와 정의라는 오아시스로 변모하게 되리라는 꿈입니다.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. ··· From every mountainside, let freedom ring! ···And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania. Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California. Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia. Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee. Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

내게는 꿈이 있습니다. 내 어린 네 자식들이 언젠가는 피부색이 아니라 인격으로 평가받는 나라에 살게 되리라는 꿈입니다. 모든 산등성이에서 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다! 그리고 뉴햄프셔의 거대한 능선들에 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 뉴욕의 우람한 산맥에 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 펜실바니아의 치솟은 앨리제니 산맥에도 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 콜로라도의 눈덮인 산들에도 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 캘리포니아의 굴곡진 비탈에도 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 조지아의 스톤 산에도 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 테네시의 룩아웃 산에도 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 미시시피의 모든 언덕과 둔덕에도 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다. 모든 산등성이에 자유가 울려퍼지게 합시다.

And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

그리하여 자유가 울려퍼지면, 우리가 모든 마을과 모든 촌락, 모든 주와 모든 도시에 자유가 울려퍼지게 하면, 흑인과 백인이, 유대인과 비유대인이, 개신교도와 가톨릭교도가 손을 맞잡고 흑인영가를 함께 부를 그날이 오도록 우리는 박차를 가할 수 있을 것입니다. 마침내 자유! 마침내 자유! 전능하신 하느님께 감사드리오니, 우리는 마침내 자유로워졌나이다!
