그러니까 ’sound’는 의미 없는 소음을 가리키고 ‘fury’는 도무지 납득하기 어려운 악다구니나 떼를 쓰는 행위를 가리킵니다. 둘 다 본질상 같은 거죠. 어찌 보면 ‘정상인’의 관점에서만 의미가 없는 것인지도 모르겠습니다.

William Faulkner said in an interview that the title of his novel, “The Sound and the Fury,” was taken from a line in William Shakespeare’s drama “Macbeth.”

In “Macbeth,” Act 5, Scene 5, Macbeth’s soliloquy appears:

Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

So, ’sound’ refers to a meaningless noise, and ‘fury’ refers to an act of yelling or fighting that is difficult to understand. Both are essentially the same.

In some ways, it may be meaningless only from the perspective of a ‘normal person’.
