What is important is that the scheme of interpretation here adopted can claim for each of its main positions the express authority of one, or the other, of some supreme master of thought – Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Hume, Kant. But ultimately nothing rests on authority; the final court of appeal is intrinsic reasonableness. The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.

중요한 점은 이 책의 주요 부분들에 플라톤, 아리스토텔레스, 데카르트, 로크, 흄, 칸트 같은 사상의 거장들이 지닌 명백한 권위가 해석의 틀, 즉 해석 도구로 활용될 수 있다는 것이다. 그러나 궁극적으로는 그런 권위에 기대지는 않으려 한다. 이 책에서 호소하는 최종 판단 기준은 ‘본질적인 합리성’(내재하는 합리성)이다. 유럽 철학의 전통을 가장 무난하게 일반적으로 규정하자면, 플라톤에 대한 일련의 각주들(해석들)로 이루어졌다는 점이다.

I do not mean the systematic scheme of thought which scholars have doubtfully extracted from his writings. I allude to the wealth of general ideas scattered through them. His personal endowments, his wide opportunities for experience at a great period of civilization, his inheritance of an intellectual tradition not yet stiffened by excessive systematization, have made his writing an inexhaustible mine of suggestion.

학자들이 플라톤의 대화편들에서 마구 끄집어내어 꿰맞춘 도식적 해석들을 일컫는 것이 아니다. 나는 플라톤의 대화편들 곳곳에 깃들어있는 일반 개념의 풍부함을 넌지시 드러내고자 하는 것이다. 플라톤의 천부적 재능, 찬란한 문명기를 두루 경험할 수 있었던 폭넓은 기회, 그리고 과도한 체계화에 경직되지 않은 지적 전통을 물려받았다는 점 등이, 그의 대화편들을 우리에게 끊임없이 많은 것을 시사해주는 고갈되지 않는 보고로 만들어주었다.
