SOKRATES: “Here is a parable to illustrate the degrees in which our nature may be enlightened or unenlightened. Imagine the condition of men living in a sort of cavernous chamber underground, with an entrance open to the light and a long passage all down the cave. Here they have been from childhood, chained by the leg and also by the neck, so that they cannot move and can see only what is in front of them, because the chains will not let them turn their heads. At some distance higher up is the light of a fire burning behind them; and between the prisoners and the fire is a track with a parapet built along it, like the screen at a puppet show which hides the performers while they show their puppets over the top. Now behind this parapet imagine persons carrying along various artificial objects, including figures of men and animals in wood or stone or other materials, which project above the parapet. Naturally, some of these persons will be talking, others silent.”

“밝혀지거나 밝혀지지 않은 상태에 있는 우리 본성의 상태를 그린 우화가 여기 있네. 빛이 들어오는 입구가 있고 저 안쪽으로 길게 뚫린 지하의 동굴 방 같은 곳에 사는 사람들의 모습을 떠올려 보세. 그들은 어릴 적부터 사지와 목이 결박된 상태로 살아 왔는데, 사슬 때문에 고개를 가눌 수 없기에 자기들 앞에 있는 것들만 볼 수 있을 뿐이지. 그들 뒤의 약간 높은 곳에 횃불이 하나 놓여 있네. 몸이 묶인 사람들과 그 횃불 사이에 담장을 끼고 좁은 길이 하나 나 있는데, 그 담장은 무대 위로 인형을 치켜 들며 공연을 하면서도 인형을 조작하는 자기들 모습은 드러내 보이지 않게 하는 인형극의 가림막 같다네. 이 담에 숨어서 사람들이 나무나 돌이나 다른 재료로 만든 동물과 사람 형상의 여러 소품들을 담 위로 들어서 보여주면서 왔다갔다 하는 장면을 떠올려 보게나. 이 사람들 중에 일부는 자연스레 말을 하고 또 어떤 이는 잠자코 있다네.”

GLAUCON: “It is a strange picture, and a strange sort of prisoners.”

“기이한 모습에 기이한 수인들이군요.”

SOKRATES: “Like ourselves; for in the first place prisoners so confined would have seen nothing of themselves or of one another, except the shadows thrown by the fire-light on the wall of the Cave facing them, would they?”

“우리와 같은 사람들이라네. 수인들은 결박되어 있어 서로 쳐다볼 수 없기에 횃불이 동굴 벽에 비추는 그림자만 볼 수 있을 걸세. 그렇지 않겠나?
