What holds for the handicrafts also applies to rhetoric, which teaches us how to persuade but does not determine whether we should do so on a given occasion. This determination belongs to statesmanship. Rhetoric is therefore distinct from statesmanship and subservient to it(304D-E). So too for the general’s art, which knows how to wage war but does not determine whether, in a given case, war should be made or peace should be sought. This belongs to “the art that is genuinely kingly” (305A). Like rhetoric, the general’s art is subservient to that of the statesman. The same holds for judges, whose sphere is limited to guarding the laws. It too is subservient to kingship (305C). – p. 144
